Business Licences

Would you like to operate or conduct business within the Town of View Royal? If so, you will likely need to obtain a business licence. You may also require other permits to get your business started. Please note that you cannot submit forms to the Town electronically. You may download and print the forms required and submit them in person at Town Hall along with the necessary payment. Be sure to bring payment with your Business Licence Application Form [PDF - 64 KB] to Town Hall.

What type of license do I need?

There are a number of different licenses available. You may even need more than one.

Home Occupation - If you want to run a business from your home.

Intermunicipal - If you need to cary out your work throught Greater Victoria on different sites (ex. Trades, personal services, contract work)

Commercial - You have a specific commercial location space that your business resides.

Non-Resident - You are from outside Greater Victoria, but need to work in View Royal for a specific job. (Generally construction or contracts that are not ongoing but for a specific job until completion)

Apartment, Pub or Liquor Store - these all have specific licenses. 

*Please note that for all business license application the location of a business CANNOT be a post office box or storage unit. There must be a physical address in which the owner/ operator can be contacted directly. 

Home Occupation

If you are interested in operating a home occupied business you will also need to apply for a business licence. Businesses operated in residences have specific regulations:

  • The occupation must be a specifically authorized use within your zone (see the Zoning Bylaw, section 4, 6 & 7, for specific uses and permissions).
  • You must live in the home where the business is occupied,
  • The occupation cannot create any offensive odors, noise, ground vibration, or electrical interference,
  • It must be completely enclosed within a building,
  • It cannot include retail sales for any item produced off site,
  • It cannot increase traffic or parking,or you must meet additional parking requirements as per the licence requirements.
  • The space occupied by the occupation must be less than 20% of the total floor area of the home and not more than 400 square feet,

There are three levels of a home occupation business. Section 4 of View Royal's Zoning Bylaw outlines the restrictions and permitted uses of a home operated business. Please ensure that you have read and understand all the bylaw requirements for home occupied businesses before undertaking any business at home.

Bed & Breakfast or Vacation Rentals - There are a number of additional requirements to run a bed & breakfast in View Royal. Additional 3 spaces for parking over the required two residential spots required for all dwellings. Section four of the Zoning Bylaw outlines the additional requirments for this business typethese must be satisfied in addition to the Level 3 requirments.

Business Signage

If you would like to use signage for your business please refer to the Sign Bylaw and make sure you apply for your sign permit BEFORE erecting any, or ordering any signage as there may be rules around what type of signage is allowed, placement, size, letter heights and illumination.
