View Royal Garden Club General Meeting

March 27, 2019 (7:30 PM - 9:30 PM)

The View Royal Garden Club will hold a general meeting on Wednesday March 27 at 7:30pm at Wheeley Hall, 500 Admirals Rd. in Esquimalt.

The topic this month is 'The Story of Vancouver Island as Told By Plants' presented by Mr. James Miskelly. Mr. Miskelly is a biologist with expertise in Garry Oak ecosystems, plants, insects and restoration. He will endeavour to show how the vegetation of southern Vancouver Island was shaped by a variety of forces over the last 10,000 years. Ice ages and warm spells left behind a curious juxtaposition of species seeming to belong in the frozen north beside species more at home in the southern deserts. Landscape-scale management by Coast Salish civilizations over millennia has likewise left tell-tale signs in the plant community. In the last 200 years, vegetation was altered at an unprecedented rate. What do you see when you look at a forest, marsh, or meadow? What ancient stories do the plants tell?

As well, a judged mini show will feature exhibits from members' gardens and there will be a sales table with plants and garden items. Visitors and new members are welcome. A drop-in fee of $5 covers refreshments.
