Province Sets Housing Targets for View Royal

View Royal, BC - On July 30, 2024, the Province announced new housing targets for the Town of View Royal to build 585 new homes over the next five years under the Housing Supply Act.

“The Town has updated bylaws to align with Provincial direction and has implemented additional measures to lower construction costs, making new homes more attainable while balancing the protection of mature trees and maintaining the character of our neighbourhoods”, noted Mayor Sid Tobias. “View Royal has approved many large-scale developments that are at various stages of completion, and we do not see any challenge in meeting the housing targets. The Town does have significant concerns over the cost of infrastructure to support this development such as adequate roads, sewage and sidewalks as well as the cumulative effect of the unprecedented growth of the West Shore Municipalities that are affecting adequate primary care, daycare, public transportation, policing and ecological balance. The Town does not predict that any of these measures will produce any significant impact on the affordability or attainability of housing and without adequate infrastructure and services it will have a negative impact on liveability.”

Later this year, the Town will be initiating its Official Community Plan review process, which guides how the community will develop and change over time. Through that process, the Town will outline how it will address important issues like housing and land development, transportation and mobility, infrastructure, parks and recreation, local economy, and climate change. The Town also has an ambitious strategic plan that will benefit from ongoing community engagement as the Town considers community investments and future policy directions.

Housing Supply Act Information

In May 2023, the Province of BC brought into force the Housing Supply Act to build more housing faster in communities with the greatest housing need. The Province has set housing targets for 47 municipalities that are prescribed under the Housing Supply Regulation.
