Prescribed Burning at the Department of National Defence's Rocky Point Property
September 17, 2025
The Department of National Defence (DND) will be conducting prescribed burns at Rocky Point in Metchosin, BC. Similar to past years, up to 50 hectares of land may be burned over approximately three to five days between September 17 and early October.
Prescribed burning is the planned and controlled application of fire to a specific land area and is one of the most ecologically appropriate and efficient means for achieving public safety and resource management objectives. Prescribed burns are effective in achieving several land management objectives for DND including mitigating wildfire risks, maintaining open natural landscapes for military training, and protecting and restoring rare Garry Oak ecosystems which support many species at risk.
Prescribed burns will be conducted by the British Columbia Wildfire Service (BCWS) when weather and atmospheric conditions are most favourable and within site specific fire indices. Some smoke will be generated during prescribed burns.
