Lower Speed Limits Coming to View Royal Roadways

Following Council’s adoption of an amendment to the Streets Bylaw (No. 980, 2019) on December 2, 2025, the Town will begin rolling out reduced speed limits on select roadways. Reducing speeds is a cost-effective way to improve road safety, particularly in residential areas and near schools, and responds to feedback and strategies identified in the Town’s 2023 Active Transportation Network Plan. 

Beginning August 21, speed limits will be reduced generally in the following areas:

  • Residential classed roads: reduced to 30km/hr
  • Island Highway, from Admirals Road to Burnside Road West: reduced to 40km/hr
  • Collector classed roadways surrounding Eagle View Elementary School: reduced to 40km/hr

The work will involve the installation of new and revised speed limit signs, and will take approximately a week to complete.

Why Are Slower Speeds Safer?

  • Reduced risk of serious injury or death: A pedestrian hit at 30 km/h has a 90% chance of surviving, while a pedestrian hit at 50 km/h has an 80% chance of being killed.
  • More time to react: At slower speeds, drivers travel a shorter distance before reacting and require less distance to stop, giving them more time to respond to road conditions and other road users.
  • Quieter neighbourhoods: Lower speeds can contribute to quieter, more livable residential streets and provide a cost-effective approach to traffic calming.

 Until new signage is in place, existing posted speed limits remain in effect. Residents who observe speeding or unsafe driving behaviour are encouraged to contact the West Shore RCMP non-emergency line at 250-474-2264.
