Town of View Royal Recognizes Two Community Members with Mayor’s Awards
March 6, 2026
Two members of the View Royal community were recognized with Mayor’s Awards at the March 3, 2026, Council meeting. Russ Ridout and Mike Mason were honoured following an incident on November 27, 2025, that highlighted both quick thinking and the strong sense of connection within the community.
While travelling along Burnett Road, Ridout noticed a Waste Management truck stopped at the side of the road. When he approached the vehicle to greet longtime driver Mike Mason, he quickly realized that Mason was experiencing a medical emergency. Ridout immediately called 911 and alerted staff at the nearby View Royal Public Safety Building, allowing emergency responders to arrive within moments.
A former volunteer firefighter with the Town of View Royal, Ridout’s quick response helped ensure Mason received the assistance he needed.
“Russ trusted his instincts, acted with purpose, and put someone else’s wellbeing first,” said Councillor Damian Kowalewich, who presented the Mayor’s Award to Ridout on behalf of Mayor Sid Tobias and Council. “His actions remind us that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference when they choose to act.”
Councillor Gery Lemon presented the Mayor’s Award to Mike Mason, recognizing his longstanding connection with residents across View Royal.
“Mike is beloved across View Royal and has built genuine relationships with residents and their pets in every neighbourhood,” said Lemon.
Following the incident, Mason has made a full recovery and has since returned to work.
Mayor’s Awards are presented periodically by the Town of View Royal to recognize individuals whose actions or contributions positively impact the community.
