Urban Forest Strategy Adopted by Town Council
March 23, 2026
The Town of View Royal’s first Urban Forest Strategy has been adopted by Council, marking an important milestone in actioning short to long-term investments in the management, protection, and growth of the community’s urban forest.
The Strategy was developed over the past year and informed by two phases of public engagement. In fall 2024, residents shared their values and priorities for the future of View Royal’s urban forest. In summer 2025, the community was invited to review and provide feedback on the draft Strategy. This input helped shape the final vision, goals, and recommended actions.
As part of the adoption, Council approved a canopy cover target of 30%. This target was selected following a comparison of the operational and financial requirements associated with several canopy cover target scenarios. The range of scenarios and analysis are also included in the document for future reference and reflections.
The Urban Forest Strategy provides a framework until 2046 to guide decision-making and will support a more resilient, diverse, and healthy urban forest across parks, streets, and private lands.
What’s Next
Staff will bring forward future programs and service requests to Council that support implementation of the Strategy and progress toward the 30% canopy cover target by 2046.
