The Community Climate Action Strategy was adopted by Council on May 17, 2022. Stay tuned for a new web page later this summer on what we can all do as a community to address climate change!

Community Climate Action Strategy - 2022 [PDF - 5 MB]

Introduction

The Town of View Royal is one of nearly 1,500 communities around the world to have declared a climate emergency. Now, more than ever before, communities need bold climate action that reflects the gravity of this declaration and appropriately addresses the crisis of global climate change.

The impacts of climate change are being felt in View Royal just as they are across Canada and around the world. Our community’s sustainability and prosperity depends on the decisions we make in the near term.

Project Overview

The Town of View Royal developed a Community Climate Action Strategy (CCAS). The purpose of the CCAS is to:

  • update View Royal’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets;
  • help develop climate action policies for the Town's Official Community Plan; and
  • prioritize community actions to mitigate climate change at the local level.

The CCAS reflects scientific data as well as our values, our needs and our community, with an eye to adaptation so we can build social, economic and environmental resilience. It's our guide to strengthen and protect what makes View Royal unique while lowering our impacts on global climate change.

Project Timeline

The development of the CCAS took place between August 2021 and February 2022. The timeline for creating the CCAS included public and stakeholder engagement, completing a greenhouse gas emission inventory, and evaluating models of potential scenarios. Through this process we learned what steps we need to take to make the biggest impact.

Public Engagement

Public engagement for the CCAS included a two-part online workshop as well as two online surveys to gather in-depth input from key stakeholders and interested members of the public.

  • Online Workshops (October 4 & 13, 2021)

The purpose of the workshops was to gather in-depth input from key stakeholders and interested members of the public to supplement the Online Surveys for View Royal. Facilitated by Community Energy Association, the online format allowed all participants to learn about the CCAS and provide feedback and insight.

  • Online Survey #1 (October 2021)

The purpose of the initial survey was to find out what View Royal residents think and feel about the changing climate. When both surveys are complete, a summary of preliminary results will be available in late 2021 or early 2022.

  • Online Survey #2 (November 2021)

The purpose of the second survey was to help identify priorities for the community climate action in View Royal.
