Update - February 24

BC Hydro has suspended repairs to its underground equipment work along the 200-block of Island Highway in View Royal. The site will be filled by the end of day on Tuesday, February 24 and the eastbound lane will reopen. The work site will be repaved on Friday, February 27. There will be single-alternating lanes from 9:00am - 3:00pm while road repairs are made on Friday. As the site will be gravel-filled until paving is completed, drivers are encouraged to use caution. Thank you for your patience.

Original - February 11

The Town of View Royal is advising residents and commuters of upcoming maintenance work by BC Hydro along the 200-block of Island Highway that will result in significant traffic impacts.

BC Hydro will be undertaking critical maintenance work on underground transmission infrastructure along the 200-block of Island Highway, between Stewart Avenue and Plowright Drive. Construction is scheduled to take place from February 23 to March 6, 2026.

For up to 14 days, excavation work will require the eastbound lane of Island Highway to remain closed for the duration of the project (i.e. travelling towards Craigflower Road in Esquimalt). As a result, eastbound traffic travelling toward Esquimalt will be detoured as early as the Island Highway/Burnside Road West intersection, and Helmcken Road, both detouring traffic towards Highway 1 (see the suggested detour map below). Local roads in the area will be limited to local traffic only and will not function as detour routes. Electronic message boards will be installed in advance of the work area to help drivers plan ahead.

Residents and road users can expect construction noise and temporary changes to traffic patterns during this period. Bus stops will remain in place and transit routes will not be impacted and emergency access along the roadway will be maintained. Access to local businesses and street parking will also remain available.

The Town of View Royal encourages drivers to allow extra time, reduce their speed in the construction zone, and follow the direction of traffic control personnel and posted signage to ensure the safety of workers and the public. If possible, please avoid the area.

The Town appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents and commuters while this important infrastructure maintenance work is completed. Visit our Municipal511 webpage for live information about road closures, construction activity, and other disruptions within View Royal.
